Roses by Abbott Handerson Thayer is a beautiful still life depicting roses in a blue vase. The flowers have the quality of freshly picked wild roses, and they remind us of the short-lived nature of cut flowers. There is a poignancy to the painting, but the subject matter itself is delicate and elegant.

Abbott Handerson Thayer
Abbott Handerson Thayer (1849-1921) is among the preeminent American painters of the turn of the 20th century. His works reside in major American art collections throughout America, including the Smithsonian’s American Art Museum and Freer Gallery of Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the Museum of Fine Arts Boston.
He was a lifelong naturalist and wildlife advocate whose artistic practice was inseparable from his veneration of the natural world. His 1909 publication, Concealing Coloration in the Animal Kingdom, remains among the most innovative and thought-provoking works on wildlife and animal camouflage.
When Thayer turned eighteen, his family moved from New Hampshire to Brooklyn. Here the thriving art and literary scene fed his imagination. For a time Thayer studied in Paris, and soon after his return to New York, his career prospered. However his wife, Kate, suffered from extreme depression, and Thayer struggled to sustain his inspiration without her emotional support. The loss of Kate remained a source of sadness and he looked for strength in his children, whom he painted as allegorical and religious figures. The family moved to Dublin, New Hampshire, where Thayer painted outdoors.
